[Translation by Rabbi Steve Greenberg]

I further observed all the oppressions that goes on under the sun. Behold, the tears of the oppressed. There is no one to comfort them. In the hands of their oppressors there is power, and there is no one to comfort them.

And Moses said: 'It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God; lo, if we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us? [Translation by Rabbi Steven Greenberg]

Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and careless ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. [Translation by Rabbi Steven Greenberg]

18:16 And the men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to send them on their way. 17 And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, to keep the way of the LORD, to do what is righteousness and just; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

The two angels arrived in Sodom in the evening, as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to greet them and, bowing low with his face to the ground, he said, "Please, my lords, turn aside to your servant's house to spend the night, and bathe your feet; then you may be on your way early." But they said, "No, we will spend the night in the square." But he urged them strongly, so they turned his way and entered his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
