Listen to this, you who devour the needy, annihilating the poor of the land, saying, "If only the new moon were over, so that we could sell grain; the sabbath, so that we could offer wheat for sale, using an ephah that is too small, and a shekel that is too big, tilting a dishonest scale, and selling grain refuse as grain! We will buy the poor for silver, the needy for a pair of sandals."
[JPS translation]

To Me, O Israelites, you are just like the Ethiopians [declares Adonai]. True, I brought Israel up from the land of Egypt, but also the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Arameans from Kir.

Therefore, O king, may my advice be acceptable to you: Redeem your sins by beneficence and your iniquities by generosity to the poor; then your serenity may be extended.

[God] upholds the cause of the orphan and the widow, and befriends the stranger, providing him/her with food and clothing. -- You too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

For the land that you are entering to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and irrigated it, like a garden of vegetables. But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven

13) And it will be, if you hearken to My commandments that I command you this day to love Adonai, your God, and to serve God with all your heart and with all your soul,
14) I will give the rain of your land at its time, the early rain and the latter rain, and you will gather in your grain, your wine, and your oil.
15) And I will give grass in your field for your livestock, and you will eat and be sated.
16) Beware, lest your heart be misled, and you turn away and worship strange gods and prostrate yourselves before them.
